CDO Wrap: welcome to 19/20

1 July 2019

Um …. It’s a new financial year? For real? Like really, for real?

I hate saying that time seems to be going too fast …. but really, it’s so true. I’m quite flabbergasted (there’s a word we should use more often) that we are more than halfway through 2019.

Anyhoo … What’s been happening in the world of digital and innovation in this fabulous river city of ours?

Well, my number one highlight, was the first warm-up event for Something Digital, Brisbane’s digital festival. I chatted, panel style, with Llew Jury (serial digital entrepreneur), Melissa Witheriff (innovation genius at CUA) and Marek Kowalkiewicz (provocateur and digital debater) about the state of digital in 2019.

A fabulous recap can be found here …. It wasn’t the ‘digital’ conversations that most excited me – it was the human ones. The panel agreed that we’ve moved past the ‘digital for digital’ sake phase of adoption and now the focus is on creating truly human-centred solutions to problems. Of course, the warm-up event was just a taste of the main festival which is happening on 24 October. You want to be there and you don’t want to miss your ticket – they are selling like hotcakes (even in last-minute commitment Brisbane 😉).

My number two highlight was Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s announcement regarding two new award categories at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Business Awards – the Award for Outstanding Microbusiness (in addition to the CCIQ Award for Outstanding Small Business) and the ISPT Award for Outstanding Social Enterprise.

Micro and small businesses of Brisbane are often ‘missed’ in acknowledgement and programs, so I’m stoked that there’s now the opportunity to shout their efforts from the rooftops. Brisbane is fast becoming Australia’s capital of social enterprises or businesses with a ‘profit for purpose’ agenda … Putting the spotlight on those businesses will encourage others to be more aware of how they can drive positive change, whilst driving a profitable business. More information, as well as nomination information, can be found here.

My final highlight, for now, was seeing the Brisbane Innovate lab come to life. To do it justice I will write more about it another time. In the meantime, see what we’re up to at Brisbane Innovate – solving the complex challenges of the city through collaboration and design thinking.

I hope that even if your world is moving as fast as mine you’re having as much fun as I am 😊
